Max Fleischer is working on a sketch of Betty at his drawing table, when quitting time arrives. After Betty says goodbye to “Uncle Max,” Ko Ko jumps out of the inkwell and finds an uneaten candy bar, which he promptly gobbles, developing a terrible toothache in the process. Betty uses the art supplies to draw herself a dentist’s office so that she can help Ko Ko, and then plays dentist. When she gets involved with the laughing gas … well, just go watch! Imagine trying to publish a cartoon like this these days!

Betty gets top billing in Jack & the Beanstalk because she was the bigger star by the latter part of 1931, but second-billed Bimbo plays the title role & has the larger amount of screen time. Bimbo has reverted to the un-cute white-faced Bimbo in this one. Betty still has doggy ears.

Betty and Pudgy are on the roof of their tenement building, trying to get her pet pigeons back in their cage. One stubborn bird refuses to return to the roost, despite Betty’s please. Pudgy, imagining himself a might hunting dog, attempts to catch the bird, with little success. When the pigeon gives Pudgy the slip, the little dog eventually wanders into the forest, where he falls asleep from exhaustion. The pigeon takes pity on Pudgy, and flies him back to Betty’s home. When Pudgy wakes up on the roof, he tears up the picture of the hunting dog in frustration.

It’s 1932, the Great Depression, Prohibition and Franklin Roosevelt is about to defeat Herbert Hoover. Betty Boop decides to run for president against Mr. Nobody (“Who cares if you break a log? Nobody!”). Betty’s promises are wonderful:

Street cleaners will have thier own chauffeur and limousine
All potholes will be carpeted, to keep high-heeled horses from tripping
The carpets will be vauumed of course
Trolley will stop at everyones front door, even if they live in an apartment
Policemen in rocking chairs will ensure that cats can cross the street safely
Fire hydrants will have privacy screens for the dogs
A giant umbrella to keep the rain off. This is the first appearance of Grampy, who invents the umbrella idea

One of the best Betty Boop cartoons ever.

Betty falls asleep doing a jigsaw puzzle of a white rabbit. She “awakes” just in time to follow the rabbit through the looking glass into a modern wonderland. Betty meets most of the traditional inhabitants of Wonderland and sings “How Do You Do” (to the tune of “Everyone Says I Love You”) to them. When the Jabberwocky steals Betty away, everyone comes to her rescue. Betty wakes up back in her living room, just in time to prevent the white rabbit from again escaping from her puzzle.

The short opens with a brief live action segment featuring David Rubinoff and his orchestra. A badly hung-over sun (complete with ice-pack on his head) slowly rises over Betty Boop’s farm. Betty’s farm is a sanctuary for birds, but the sanctuary is soon threatened by the arrival of the Tom Kat’s Social Club, a group of hungry cats looking for an easy meal. They chase a helpless chick back to Betty’s farm, who alerts Betty to the danger. The cats initially wreak destruction on the farm, and easily overpower Betty. When the sickly rooster finds out what’s happening, he quickly turns into a fighter (boxing gloves and all), and pummels the cats. The other birds join in on the beating, and chase away the hapless cats. The rooster defeats the cat’s leader and Betty declares him the winner.

After a short live action performance by the Royal Samoans, Bimbo appears on screen playing a ukelele while riding in a motorboat. The motorboat goes faster and faster, until it crashes into a tropical island. Bimbo flies into the air and lands in another boat, this one containing a topless (except for a strategically placed lei) and dark-skinned Betty Boop.

Then he shows himself rescuing her from the island, but also inadvertently releases an unsavory group of ghosts who chase the pair through a jungle that also magically appeared. The pair loses the ghosts using the hollow-log-over-the-cliff trick.
