During The Great Depression An old farmer has let his entire farm go and it is falling down around him. The mice taking over. Tome and Jerry, saxophone salesmen show up at the farm with magical saxophones. While the farmer is indifferent to their music, they show him how useful saxophones can be. Their jazzy music soon have a cow gives gallons and gallons and gallons of milk, the farmer’s chickens laying eggs, and his woodpeckers chopping down a tree and splitting it into firewood. The music even brings the farmer a nice, frothy mug of beer from the well. Tom and Jerry receive a huge bag of money for the saxophones, but he gets the better deal…

Tom and Jerry are aboard a train making its way up a mountain in the Swiss Alps. When their train breaks down, they’re spotted by a very thin St. Bernard, who brings the engine some liquor. The engine zips through the Alps, but leaves the pair behind. They play their horn, which is answered by a herd of goats, who boot Tom and Jerry down the mountain. They find a group of yodelers on the side of another mountain, and are then lured to a Swiss chalet by one of them using some Swiss cheese on a string. When the locals get angry, Tom and Jerry try to appease them by yodeling, playing instruments and dancing. They then steal some Swiss cheese, which makes them both holey; mice, mistaking them for cheese, chase them down the mountain.

Tom and Jerry (the human versions, not the cat and mouse) are on a raft in the ocean. After being attacked by an octopus and losing their raft, they wash up on the shores of Spain. After harassing the waitresses at a local sidewalk café, they insult the owner and wind up in a bull ring as punishment. In the midst of fighting dozens of bulls, they receive a telegram that Prohibition has been repealed back in the U.S. They immediately leave Spain headed back to the U.S. for a drink.

Tom and Jerry find their wagon west attacked by Indians, but escape only after being rescued by all the branches of the military, including the Army’s tanks.

A cartoon with lots of music and action as well as ethnic stereotypes the 1930s way: “An unremarkable wild west cartoon is improved by the comedy of the unexpected. Numerous seemingly fat, cloaked Indians are unwrapped to reveal beautiful girls; when the cavalry leader uncloaks the Chief, he’s revealed as a Jewish caricature. The Jewish Indian was a standard vaudeville gag at the time, in part the result of Fanny Brice’s hit song on the theme (I’m an Indian).”

Tom and Jerry: Piano Tooners

Tom and Jerry (the human versions, not the cat and mouse) work as piano tuners. After seeing them at work and several creative ways of tuning a piano (such as removing the offending key and cutting the key itself to a shorter length), the two attend an opera singers performance. The singer passes out when the piano plays a wrong note, and Tom and Jerry are pressed into service to re-tune the piano. After pulling the offending key from the keyboard like a bad tooth, the two give the opera audience a jazz piano performance, with the now recovered opera singer joining in.

Tom and Jerry are transporting goods via airplane to Africa. But being white men they’re worried they won’t be safe, so they put on blackface to fit in. Once they’re wearing it, they adopt black dialect and fully inhabit their new characters. They crash into the ocean and use the wing of the plane as a raft. Before reaching land, they suffer the advances of an over-affectionate octopus and more serious danger from sharks, a swordfish and a whale. Once on land, they’re frightened by fantastic creatures, and duck into a cave. Inside it’s even worse when they encounter living skeletons in blackface. And upon exiting the cave, things are even worse than that when they are discovered by cannibals.

This Tom and Jerry cartoon (the human versions, not the cat and mouse) is an opportunity for the animators to have fun with the medium. There is no specific plot. One of the boys uses a pencil to create a myriad number of animated illusions that could only work in a cartoon. For example, a short vertical line is drawn, which when held by both ends suddenly becomes a saxophone. When played, the notes pop out of the bell of the instrument to suddenly grow legs and transform into ducks. After the song, the saxophone itself quickly follows suit and becomes a goose. The entire short consists of these disjointed, though often creative and humorously unlikely events.

Pots and Pans is another Van Beuren cartoon that stars a couple of humans named Tom and Jerry, years before a certain cat-and-mouse team from MGM inherited those titles after the human ones disappeared. They run a train diner with their name on it. Many of the food have faces and move. They also sing with various customers along with the leading duo. Typical ’30s-style animation meant to mainly fill time before the big feature is at least a little more entertaining than any Saturday morning cartoon that has limited movement because of low budgets. Anyone interested in all eras of animation or at least all things Van Beuren should definitely check out Pots and Pans.

Tom and Jerry: The Tuba Tooter

A German “ohm-pah” trio is incomplete until their tuba player arrives on a boat from overseas. The resulting quartet brings the whole town out for a German dance party, until the police arrive to take the “tuba tooter” to jail.
