Tom and Jerry were fictional characters that starred in a series of early sound cartoons produced by the Van Beuren Studios, and distributed by RKO. The series lasted from 1931 to 1933. When Official Films purchased the Van Beuren library in the 1950s, the characters were renamed Dick and Larry to avoid confusion with Tom and Jerry, the famous MGM cartoon series of the 40’s and 50’s. Today, animation historians refer to the characters as Van Beuren’s Tom and Jerry. All cartoons are in public domain because of missing copyright indication.
Interestingly, Joseph Barbera began his career as an animator and script writer on this series. In 1940, Barbera co-created with William Hanna another duo of cartoon characters using the same names: a cat and mouse named Tom and Jerry.
Tom and Jerry (the human versions, not the cat and mouse) work as piano tuners. After seeing them at work and several creative ways of tuning a piano (such as removing the offending key and cutting the key itself to a shorter length), the two attend an opera singers performance.

Pots and Pans is another Van Beuren cartoon that stars a couple of humans named Tom and Jerry, years before a certain cat-and-mouse team from MGM inherited those titles after the human ones disappeared. They run a train diner with their name on it. Many of the food have faces and move. They also sing with various customers along with the leading duo.
A German “ohm-pah” trio is incomplete until their tuba player arrives on a boat from overseas. The resulting quartet brings the whole town out for a German dance party, until the police arrive to take the “tuba tooter” to jail.
