After Betty says goodbye to “Uncle Max,” Ko Ko jumps out of the inkwell and finds an uneaten candy bar, which he promptly gobbles, developing a terrible toothache in the process. Betty uses the art supplies to draw herself a dentist’s office so that she can help Ko Ko, and then plays dentist. When she gets involved with the laughing gas … well, just go watch! Imagine trying to publish a cartoon like this these days!

Betty and Pudgy are on the roof of their tenement building, trying to get her pet pigeons back in their cage. One stubborn bird refuses to return to the roost, despite Betty’s please. Pudgy, imagining himself a might hunting dog, attempts to catch the bird, with little success. When the pigeon gives Pudgy the slip, the little dog eventually wanders into the forest, where he falls asleep from exhaustion. The pigeon takes pity on Pudgy, and flies him back to Betty’s home. When Pudgy wakes up on the roof, he tears up the picture of the hunting dog in frustration.

It’s 1932, the Great Depression, Prohibition and Franklin Roosevelt is about to defeat Herbert Hoover. Betty Boop decides to run for president against Mr. Nobody (“Who cares if you break a log? Nobody!”). Betty’s promises are wonderful:

Street cleaners will have thier own chauffeur and limousine
All potholes will be carpeted, to keep high-heeled horses from tripping
The carpets will be vauumed of course
Trolley will stop at everyones front door, even if they live in an apartment
Policemen in rocking chairs will ensure that cats can cross the street safely
Fire hydrants will have privacy screens for the dogs
A giant umbrella to keep the rain off. This is the first appearance of Grampy, who invents the umbrella idea

One of the best Betty Boop cartoons ever.

The dog breaks its rope and gives chase after the young boy who has managed to climb aboard the now motionless train. The boy has started the train and is headed towards a collision with another train. The dog saves the boy in the last second before the trains collide.

Little Audrey is warned by Petunia the housekeeper not to read by moonlight, or she will have bad dreams. Of course, Little Audrey doesn’t believe it. Later she has a dream about a land of candy. Seems pretty good no? All of a sudden, the dream changes into a small boy. He says he is a lost dream beacause he missed the dream boat to take him back to Dream Land. Little Audrey offers to help him find his way home. Now they are in Dream Land, where Little Audrey meets its ruler, the Sandman. The Sandman allows the small boy to give Little Audrey the guided tour as long as they do not go near the Black Door. The dream-boy listens, but of course Little Audrey’s curiosity is too much for her to listen.

During The Great Depression An old farmer has let his entire farm go and it is falling down around him. The mice taking over. Tome and Jerry, saxophone salesmen show up at the farm with magical saxophones. While the farmer is indifferent to their music, they show him how useful saxophones can be. Their jazzy music soon have a cow gives gallons and gallons and gallons of milk, the farmer’s chickens laying eggs, and his woodpeckers chopping down a tree and splitting it into firewood. The music even brings the farmer a nice, frothy mug of beer from the well. Tom and Jerry receive a huge bag of money for the saxophones, but he gets the better deal…

Little Audrey would rather eat candy than a nutritious lunch. She dreams about going to a candy land where she eats too much candy and gets the “tummy ache blues.”

Audrey first appeared in the Noveltoon Santa’s Surprise (1947), where she was the most prominent member of a multicultural child cast, and was briefly seen in the January 1948 Popeye cartoon Olive Oyl for President. Her first starring vehicle was the Noveltoons short Butterscotch and Soda, released July 16, 1948.

The short starts off as a figure dressed as Superman breaks into a bank and later a diamond deposit to steal money and gems. He then reports back and delivers his findings to his boss, a mafia don. Every paper in the city runs the story that Superman has gone bad, but Lois Lane does not believe it to be true. As she and Clark Kent read the story at the Daily Planet, an office boy informs them that the editor, Perry White, wants them to cover the opera and gives them two tickets.

Showdown (1942) is the eleventh of seventeen animated Technicolor short films based upon the DC Comics character Superman.Produced by Famous Studios, the plot focuses on a criminal who impersonates Superman to commit crimes for a gangster. The short was released to theaters by Paramount Pictures on October 16, 1942.

Japoteurs is the tenth of seventeen animated Technicolor short films based upon the DC Comics character of Superman, originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The first Superman cartoon produced by Famous Studios (the successor to Fleischer Studios), Japoteurs covers Superman’s adventures stopping Japanese spies from hijacking a bomber plane and bringing it to Tokyo. This cartoon does not bear the Famous Studios name because that company had not yet been fully organized after Max Fleischer was removed by Paramount Pictures from the studio which bore his name. The cartoon was originally released to theaters by Paramount Pictures on September 18, 1942. The word “Japoteurs” is a portmanteau of the words “Japanese” and “Saboteurs”.

Popeye has just finished his house when a band of termites attacks. He traps them in a metal garbage can, but they soon escape and launch a new attack, consuming his picket fence. He comes after them with a garden roller; they run over a bridge, then double back and eat the bridge. Popeye still manages to beat them to the house, where he builds a moat and fills it with water. They are briefly thwarted, then use a can as a boat. They enter the house and start attacking furniture, then the house itself. Their job complete and bellies full, they rest long enough for Popeye to eat his spinach and rebuild his house in steel.

A cat and a dog team up to outwit Herman the mouse. While cats and dogs are natural enemies, such is not the case in the house where Herman the mouse lives. They are very good friends indeed, are work together to make Herman’s life a hard life. Herman tries to break up their friendship, and divert their attention from guarding the cheese in the refrigerator, and almost succeeds but they make up in time to prevent Herman getting the cheese. They give chase and Herman takes refuge in a jug of wine. The cat and the dog drink up the wine while trying to get to Herman and end up drunk, happy and blissful…and so is Herman.

Popeye and Bluto are, believe it or not, pals and partners in a moving company. (Maybe it’s because Popeye isn’t squinting here.) Anyhow, Olive has made the mistake of hiring them. She hasn’t finished packing yet, so the boys, smitten as soon as she answers the door, compete to help her. Once packed, they compete to move more impressive piles of her belongings. Popeye easily wins these contests, even though Bluto locks him in the van at one point. At the end, Bluto socks Popeye into the piano, then into a table; though he hardly seems to need it, Popeye still eats his spinach, then thrashes Bluto.

Gulliver’s Travels (Lilliput)

Gulliver washes ashore on Lilliput and attempts to prevent war between that tiny kingdom and its equally-miniscule rival, Blefiscu, as well as smooth the way for the romance between the Princess and Prince of the opposing lands. In this he is alternately aided and hampered by the Lilliputian town crier and general fussbudget, Gabby. A life-threatening situation develops when the bumbling trio of Blefiscu spies, Sneak, Snoop, and Snitch, manage to steal Gulliver’s pistol.

Nominated for 2 oscars.

The city of Metropolis has received an ultimatum, from a gang known as “The Bulleteers,” that unless the treasury funds of the city are turned over to them that destruction will rain down from the skies, and proceed to prove it by destroying the city hall. “The Bullteers,” in their self-propelled projectile attempt to make good their extortion threat, but Superman arrives in time to rescue Lois Lane, from the clutches of her kidnappers, destroy the machine and capture the gang.

Tom and Jerry are aboard a train making its way up a mountain in the Swiss Alps. When their train breaks down, they’re spotted by a very thin St. Bernard, who brings the engine some liquor. The engine zips through the Alps, but leaves the pair behind. They play their horn, which is answered by a herd of goats, who boot Tom and Jerry down the mountain. They find a group of yodelers on the side of another mountain, and are then lured to a Swiss chalet by one of them using some Swiss cheese on a string. When the locals get angry, Tom and Jerry try to appease them by yodeling, playing instruments and dancing. They then steal some Swiss cheese, which makes them both holey; mice, mistaking them for cheese, chase them down the mountain.

Tom and Jerry (the human versions, not the cat and mouse) are on a raft in the ocean. After being attacked by an octopus and losing their raft, they wash up on the shores of Spain. After harassing the waitresses at a local sidewalk café, they insult the owner and wind up in a bull ring as punishment. In the midst of fighting dozens of bulls, they receive a telegram that Prohibition has been repealed back in the U.S. They immediately leave Spain headed back to the U.S. for a drink.
