As of Feb '08 I'll be 49 y.o., and I can remember watching Herman and Katnip cartoons on the Sandy Becker Show as a child - it must have been around 1965 give or take a year or two. I believe that this is the first time I've seen Herman since that time period - its now well over 40 years, and I still liked it! :) The Sandy Becker show - and Herman and Katnip were my favorite cartoon on the show - along with Beaney and Cecil were two of my favorites. I'm proud of that fact, as now that I've seen both cartoons I can see that they both displayed creativity (especially Beaney & Cecil, but H&K as well).

Not really a BAD cartoon, but when you consider that some of these same animators , directors, and writers worked on the immortal Max Fleischer Popeyes and Betty Boops, it's really sad that they were reduced to cranking out unremarkable kiddie-fare like this.

When Paramount ruthlessly kicked out the Fleischer Brothers and took over their studio, the creative spark left the place, along with Max and Dave.

Herman's voice seems to be based on that of Leo Gorcey of "Bowery Boys" fame.

The Paramount/Famous animation studio (the former Fleischer studio) made their best cartoons in the 1940s, of which this entry is among them. After about 1951 or 1952, the Famous stuff goes steadily downhill. The quality of this print, apart from the two brief glitches therein, is great and has the original Paramount titles at the beginning and end. In a few years, Herman the Mouse would be teamed with a country-bumpkin feline named Katnip in Paramount's answer (a rather lame one) to M-G-M's Tom & Jerry.

Nice little Tom and Jerryish carton here. I like this one primarily for the reason that for all the nifty little ways Herman the mouse tries to dispose the cat down the well, the cat always averts certain catastrophe, and Herman has to think of a new plan. So thereÂ?s a bit of role reversal going on here, and itÂ?s quite cleverly done.
